Should you chase the bag as an athlete? A girl running towards a bag full of money

Making money as an athlete is one thing—finding a money-making method that actually supports your training is another.

If the way you earn money is draining you more than it's helping you, it's time to rethink the balance.

Here’s precisely how I found a way to make a living without sacrificing my speed:

The Easy Part: Making Money

There are countless ways to make money. You can freelance, get a part-time gig, start a side hustle, or even build and sell a business.

But finding a method that works for you—one that doesn’t leave you exhausted and unable to train—that’s the real challenge.

As some of you may know, I am a performance SEO specialist.

It pays the bills, but if I had the choice, I’d rather walk my neighbor’s dogs for a tenth of the profit.

The reality is, not all money-making methods are created equal, and not all of them fit an athlete’s lifestyle.

The Hard Part: Balancing Money and Training

For athletes, financial support is crucial. You need money for gear, travel, competition fees, recovery, and don't forget about basic living expenses.

"REAL FOOD IS SUPERIOR TO THEM PILLS!"

But how you earn that money can either help or hurt your performance.

No amount of money is worth the stress of a draining hustle that takes more from you than it gives.

You can’t just “recover” from exhaustion by hopping in an ice bath.

Fun Fact:

If you spend all day chasing dollars, what’s left for chasing your goals on the track?

The Reality Check: My Own Struggle

I learned this the hard way. In my early years of working in SEO, I pushed myself into tight deadlines, trying to make more money—more than I really needed.

But for what? I wasn’t happier, and I certainly wasn’t getting faster...

Eventually, I found out that I need to chill a bit.

Instead of grinding out SEO content like a machine, I built relationships that allowed me to work more like an artist—writing when inspiration struck.

That shift made the work itself rewarding.

The Takeaway: Find What Works for You

There are countless money-making methods out there, each with different expectations, commitments, and pay.

The key is to find one that supports your training instead of competing with it.

Find the balance that lets you chase your dreams without burning yourself out.

Because at the end of the day...

"The fastest version of you isn’t the one with the biggest paycheck—it’s the one with the right balance of training, recovery, and support."

If you’ve experienced burnout before, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

And maybe you’re burned out right now.

I am the one that gets it.
